A quick WOW update

19 05 2010

Yesterday I had one of those days that leaves me with a smile on my face. Why the smile you ask well there are two reasons.

Firstly I finally got my hands on one of the weapons I have been after; Ice Barbed Spear. Even though it is only a rare (all be it quite a nice one) it has been a real pain in the arse to get hold of, mostly due to the fact that on my server the Horde suck donkey balls when it comes to Alterac Valley.

Still I have it now and I’m not giving it up easilly as it is a great weapon for Ret Pallys; the only time I won’t be using it is when I end up in some awful pug from the dungeon finder and end up having to play tank for a while, hate doing it though as I love seeing those pretty numbers lol.

Secondly I managed to go from 53 to 58 in one evening, that probably isn’t a lot for some people but I was damn pleased with myself. I plan on getting to 60 this evening or tomorrow and then chillaxing for a couple of days in order to give the Death Knight a whirl.

If you have been reading my ramblings for a while then you might remember that I moved away from WOW prior to WOTLK and have only just made it back, as such DKs,  Northrend, ICC etc are all refreshingly new to me and I am enjoying seeing what was changed since the Burning Crusade days.

My WOW wishlist

17 05 2010

I love games, it doesn’t hugely matter what type of game, I have played or would play more or less any type of game what so ever.

However due to being a great big geek of a certain age and disposition I have always had a soft spot in my heart for D&D style RPG, be it table top, text based scroller, Baldur’s Gate style PC fun or more recently MMORPGs.

As a result it  was more or less inevitable that I would end up falling into the life consuming black hole that is World of Warcraft, I first played about 4 years ago  now and needless to say I was impressed, there was a sheer sense of scale that I hadn’t come across before in a video game.

Times change and things move on, I grew dissillusioned with WOW and set out n search of other MMOs to pit my skills against.

I settled on Lord of the rings online by Turbine, I was very pleased with LOTRO and have been an avid player ever since I first set foot in the Shire.

For starters the game is stunning and I don’t just mean for an MMO it is stunning compared to more or less any game out there that you care to mention! The story is also very well done and the whole game does feel plot driven, no mean feat considering that the game runs parallel to the story of the fellowship and other than crossing paths with the members occasionally runs completely separately.

The only problem with LOTRO is that it doesn’t have that same sense of  scale that WOW has and I’m not talking about the size of the world map. WOW has always felt sort of limitless and like there is always something that you haven’t quite managed to do yet.

LOTRO has lost that for me a little bit, some of  the end game content has been a little bit weak and the new expansion, Siege of Mirkwood, didn’t really add to the game in the same way that Mines of Moria did.

So I went back to WOW after a 2.5 year hiatus. A LOT has changed for starters Wrath of the Lich King has been launched and we are very rapidly approaching the launch of Cataclysm, the third expansion pack.

Backstory over.

I was day dreaming on Saturday about ways in which I would try and improve WOW if I could and I actually hit upon a few ideas that I thought were actually quite feasible and would add just that little bit extra to the game, the glace cherry on top of the already delicious cake if you will.

LOTRO players might notice a theme here so I am going  to come out and say it these are ideas that are implemented in LOTRO, they aren’t unique to there but I do feel that Turbine have implemented them particularly well.

So here in no particular order is my WOW wishlist:

1. Player houses.

A simple idea and some might say a extraneous one but there is something about having your own piece of in game real estate that just adds to the overall sense of immersion.

Imagine having your tree house in Un Goro crater or a mud hut to call your own in the Barrens! Also It needn’t just be a status symbol for you to decorate and show off, you could have additional storage that you could purchase and your own little mailbox right at your front door (I’m blatantly stealing at this point!)

This is saying nothing of guild halls, imagine if you will a starter guild with some drafty two room hall in Brill, it’s humble but for you and the guys its home, contrast this with the mini-fortress on the outskirts of Orgrimmar owned by a mighty raiding guild, the walls are festooned with trophies from their countless victories and a sense of pride and strength eminates from the very building itself filling all who enter it with a sense of awe.

2. An outfit system.

If you are a player on an RPG server or just someone who likes to have a bit of a backstory and make themselves that bit different what would be better than a change of outfit.

Maybe you have some comfortable “town clothes” you want to wear after a hard days questing, perhaps you love the stats on your armour but hate how it looks?

Well what if you were to have separate tabs on your character viewer, your main tab would have the armour and equipment that you are actively using and gaining stats from, the other tabs could have items dropped onto them that would simply display; are you a mage that always wanted to run around in full plate looking like a warrior go for it, you will still be squishy and dead but you will certainly look badass!

I know this is purely for the sake of vanity but it isn’t as if this would be a first look at the whole collection of vanity pets out there that not only do people go nuts for but they pay RL money to get em. Blizzard could so much money off of this it would be nuts, we are talking fat stacks of paper just for giving people imaginary clothes.

3. Legendary Weapons.

In LOTRO there is a class of weapon that makes everything else look like a blunt fruit knife by comparison, Legendary Weapons.

Basically these are a better class of wepaon that becomes available to you late on in the game, they have a variety of different sockets – nothing new there, they can be enchanted – again no great shakes but they gain xp .

The more you use them and the more badass mothers you take down the more xp your weapon of choice gains and as we all know points make prizes, when you reach certain levels of xp you can add points to the various stats on your item.

There are even two types of NPC just to support legendary weapons; lets say you find a new legenday axe, you need to identify it before you can use it, so off you trot to an expert and find out that this particular axe has x,y,z stats, don’t like these stats? Well in that case pop next door to his buddy and melt the axe down, on melting it down you will end up various relics, gems and runes that made the axe what it was that you can either slot into other weapons or combine together to make even more powerful relics etc.

Personally I don’t like how frequently legenday weapons drop in LOTRO but I can see it working in WOW, imagine being able to have a completely customisable sword or axe or staff that would grow with you, we aren’t talking some all conquering death bringer but it would certainly be a damn damn fine weapon.

Maybe it would be a class of weapon that would only be available at end game and would add yet another face to what is available to do whilst waiting for the next expansion to come out, maybe they would be PvP only and you would get the relics etc by looting the corpses of your HKs, to my mind there are a whole range of possibilities.

Well that is it, I’m spent, I’m all wished out.

Feel free to suggest your own ideas or tear mine into shreds, healthy discussion makes the world go round after all 😉

40 here I come…

27 04 2010

I am pretty pleased; my return to playing WOW has been easier and more interesting than I thought it would be.

It’s easier than I thought as it turns out that I haven’t forgotten quite as much as I thought I had. It’s interesting as there is just simply so much new content and so many new features compared to when I was previously playing about 2 years.

A few weeks on and my dear little paladin is progressing quite nicely; as of last night I was level 39 and need a mere 5k xp in order to hit 40 and reach that fun halfway point, oh and start wearing plate of course!

I am also toying with the idea of going dual spec, I just about have enough money saved up and I’m now just kinda considering the pros and cons

I think if I do go for dual spec it is probably going to be a mix of ret pally and tankadin – very dull I realise but hey it’s what I know!

It hasn’t all been milk and honey though, only last night I managed to get myself booted from a PUG for being right?!?!?!

We were running the cathedral in scarlet monastery and our tank, a tauren warrior, was quite frankly a mouth breather.

He was doing the shoddiest job of holding aggro that I have ever seen, on literally every pull there were mobs making their way past our “tank”, getting through to our squishy cloth wearers and making mischief.

After the first half dozen cock ups I decided that if he wasn’t going to keep the agg off of the squishies then I would.

So as soon as the next mob made its way past him I hit it with hand of reckoning and taunted him over to me, a few seconds later he was a glittering pile of loot on the ground.

Did I get thanked for doing this? But of course not.

Instead the less than effective tank started smack talking me for messing with his threat and interfering with his “flow”, oh well whatever get over it.

But then, the squishies themselves pipe up to complain that I we had a tank and it was his job and as such I shouldn’t taunt or otherwise go out of my way to draw threat to me.

Grrrr, what would they rather that I let them die?  Once again I find myself saying I HATE PUGS!

A quick update from Azeroth

12 04 2010

Well I decided that it is high time that I give another quick update on my progress since returning to playing WOW.

Anyone that has read my blog recently can’t fail to have noticed that after much consideration I rolled a Retribution Paladin

This has actually worked out pretty well for me so far both in PvE and PvP, which I must say I was very surprised by!

So what is new??

Well I guess the biggest development recently is that I have hit level 30, I know I know that isn’t really any big deal but it is always nice to tick another 10 levels off!

I have been playing an awful lot of PvP which according to some people is inadvisable for a ret pally; at the moment though this isn’t really proving to be the case.

So far I am finding that I am usually in the top 5 or so for damage dealt and I certainly seem to die an awful lot less than a lot of other classes. Guess all that talk about survivability wasn’t all just a bunch of waffle after all.

I guess the real proof of the pudding will be at higher levels when people are all better geared and better acquainted with how to best play their particular class, I would like to think though that PvP would still be viable though, even at 80….We shall see!

I also started to take money making a little bit more seriously, I started a couple of  bank alts and already I am noticing a difference.

Basically I have decided that one bank alt is just going to provide storage, pure and simple. He is stood right outside the bank in Undercity and has been kitted out with enough bags to make a sherpa cringe in pain; between these and his bank space it means that I am able to keep far more bits and bobs that I come across whilst questing.

This is handy in a couple of ways, firstly I can keep my bags on my main far emptier for the stuff that I will need more or less all the time, secondly I can start hoarding mats, armour, weapons etc that I will be able to use later. Lastly it makes it far easier for me to accumulate stacks of items without worrying about space, before I was vendoring items just to free up space. Now I can either vendor whole stacks making me more £££ overall or I can put the stacks up on the AH.

My second bank alt is sat outside the AH in Silvermoon, he has one purpose and one purpose only; carry out all of my selling in the AH and also most of my buying.  I have started putting up any BoE that I don’t need regardless of what it is or if it seems worth it, so far they have all sold and all of them have generated far more than they would have if I had vendored them.

The upshot of this new found focus on my in-game finances means that I have gone from having on average 2g at any given time to having 50g on my person for the past day and a half and during this time I have been shopping like it is going out of fashion…

How to strike it rich in WOW

9 04 2010

I’m not usually a fan of gold guides, normally they are all a case of same old same old.

The usual format is to allude to a couple of systems that are “unique” to them and promise to disclose them too you in exchange for buying some Ebook or other. If that is not the case then they are often just linking to gold farming sites so you can spend your real hard earned cash in order to get rich in a game.

As such I was actually pleasantly surprised to find a site that is less of a gold guide and more just some information on the economics of WOW, it isn’t promising to get you to the gold cap or to make you 1 million gold in one night. It is just telling you how you could increase the amount of money that you make in your normal everyday play and how to make life a little easier on yourself.

Check it out you might find it useful http://goldcrafting.com/

Ding 26 or PvP here we come!

6 04 2010

Well it’s that time again when I decide to bore anyone who will listen to death with my latest updates on my current MMO of choice World of Warcraft.

As I have mentioned many times at this point I am playing as a Retribution Paladin by the name of Curadane on the Boulderfist server and have been struggling a little bit to come to terms with all of the changes that have been made to WOW in the 2 long years that I have been away from the game.

Whilst this weekend didn’t really offer much in the way of free time for me to play I did still manage to achieve a few things; first off I joined a guild, WOW is one of the few MMOs where I feel the need to be sociable and I am kinda surprised that I lasted as long as I did without attaching myself to a group of my fellow gamers, kick and screaming if need be.

The particular bunch of miscreants who have taken me under their collective wing are the Elite Horde Crew and they seem to be an ok bunch.

I also managed to complete my current class quest which was Path of the Adept and I can now run around with my very own Blood Tempered Ranseur, which is very nice and shiny even if I do need to increase my skills in polearms a little!

Oh and I managed to claw my way to the lofty height of level 26, so ding to me lol.

Possibly the biggest thing to happen in game this weekend and certainly the most interesting from my point of view is that I decided to play in a PvP battleground.

This really doesn’t sound like a big deal but for me it is; I have never played PvP before on WOW.  I was always a PvE player who was more interested in raiding and instances then running around killing random people.

But it was fun and I don’t just mean like meh it was ok I mean it was full on balls to wall fun.

I was playing in Warsong Gulch and was lucky enough to be with a good group of people all of whom seemed to know what they were doing and I don’t mind say we kicked ass.

The alliance only manged 1 flag capture whereas as we had all 3, the top 5 players were all Horde and I am pleased to say that I was only just outside of the top 5 myself.

Maybe a case of beginners luck; but one thing I am sure of running around in mail wailing on squishy little cloth wearers with a great big polearm rocks.

Keep on keeping on

29 03 2010

Just a quick follow up on a post I made the other day regarding my choice of class; I have decided to keep the ret pally, I figure playing him well should be enough of a USP to get some end game content.

Oh and I just kinda like him 🙂

So if anyone out there happens to be on the EU server Boulderfist then hit me up, as always my in game name is Curadane
