£95 burger takes the biscuit

25 07 2011

I was trawling the internet during a particularly dull moment in my work day and happened to come across an article highlighting the 4 most expensive burgers in the world (whatever did we do for fun before the internet?)

The holder of this auspicious title is the £95 “Charity Burger” from Burger King.

The meat used in the burger was Australian farmed Wagyu beef mixed with 20% Aberdeen Angus fat due to it’s own very low fat percentage – usually around a mere 2%.

This most exclusive of  patties was complimented with  oven-dried Pata Negra ham, organic mayonnaise, pink Himalayan rock salt,  truffles and 25-year-aged Modena balsamic vinegar. To make up for the fact that therewasn’t a chip in sight the whole thing was stuffed with banana shallots fried in a tempura batter made using Cristal champagne.

The buns used to contain this pinnacle of burger creation were made using white truffle flour and dusted with lashings of rare Iranian saffron.
Served on proper china and accompanied by a glass of Claret this is a burger that is a far cry from the usual paper wrapped Whopper.

Mark Dowding, the director of product development and innovation for Burger King (“Just call me the Burger King chef”) is very proud of his creation, which he says took six months to “develop”.  All proceeds from the sale of the 100 finished burgers went to an undisclosed charity.

Well even if there had been more than 100 of these available I really don’t think I would ever be able to justify spending the best part of a ton in order to chow down on a burger; especially as I am really not sure it would have been that great.

Wagyu beef is a really specialist product that has a taste and texture all of it’s own, a big part of which is the very leanness that BK have worked so hard to combat….I’m just not convinced that it would work at all as a burger.

Moving on from the burger itself; truffle flour buns with saffron, deep fried, banana shallots, truffles, mayonnaise, parma negra, himalayan rock salt and aged balsamic vinegar. That is a sh*t-load of strong flavours and whilst they may work well together there is a real risk that it would just be completely overwhelming.

My final gripe is based on the “charitable” element of the burger; at £95 each sales of all 100 burgers would generate a mere £9,500. Now far be it from me to criticise ANY charitable donation but for a company the size of Burger King lauding the donation of less than £10k just seems like a bit of a PR stunt.

Chimay Bleue – 9% Trappist Ale

25 07 2011

Brewed by Trappist monks in Belgium; Chimay Bleue is for many people the definitive Trappist ale.

At 9% it is the strongest of the three Chimay offerings, four if you manage to get your hands on their Patersbier and the one most frequently seen in pubs and off licences world over.

Like all of the Trappist beers Chimay Bleue is sold solely in order to fund the monastery and to help promote it’s good works….all the more reason to keep drinking!

A quick word of warning, the strength of Bleue is very, very well masked with very little alcoholic taste evident, as such it is quite possible to forget it is 9% and end up really quite drunk 😉

In terms of appearance Bleue is a coppery red/brown with a thinnish off-white head which dissipates quite quickly. It is typically a clear beer but I have had a couple of bottles that were quite cloudy, either way the taste wasn’t affected and that is the main thing!

A lovely sweet and fruity aroma is present upon pouring, it really puts me in mind of Demerara sugar and really plump, juicy raisins or sultanas….mmm heaven

The taste is just great, it really is, for such a strong beer it is surprisingly sweet and well-balanced. Early on you get a malty sweetness with a slight hint of spiciness creeping in, next you get the fruits hinted at in the aroma – again we are looking at dark dried fruits and even a hint of plums or damsons.

There is a nice finish to the beer with just a hint of bitterness beginning to edge in, this isn’t unpleasant in any way and actually serves to perfectly cut through the sweetness and richness of the fruit before it becomes overwhelming or cloying and gives a nice refreshing element which leaves you craving the next sip.

There are very few beers that I really finding myself longing for, sure I have personal favourites or beers that I can’t walk past without drinking but there are literally a handful of beers that I ever find myself craving….Chimay Bleue is one of that handful.

Arsenal 2- FC Koln 1

24 07 2011

Those of you living under a rock may not have noticed that there was a match yesterday…

Granted it was only a pre-season friendly against FC Koln but I for one was very pleased to find that somewhere along the line Sky have decided to gift me ESPN without telling me…Thanks lads 🙂

The final result on the day was 2-1 to the Gunners and it was a fairly pleasing game to watch. Now I am sure that some smart arse (or two) is going to jump in and remind us that Cologne are hardly Barcelona; that may well be the case but this is a side that finished 10th in the Bundesliga and can boast the likes of Lukas PodolskiMichael Rensing and Milivoje Novakovič so by the same token they are hardly Hangzou Greentown either…

We started with what looks like it could be pretty close to our first X1 minus a couple of obvious absentees – Sagna and Fabregas. Nasri played and didn’t look too pained to be there earning his miserly wages and more interestingly I got to have my first proper glance at new boys Gervinho and Carl Jenkinson.

Jenkinson had a pretty good match throughout and to my mind looks like he should be stepping straight into the first team, he looked good on and off the ball, is tall (6’2 ) and strongly built and unlike a certain Mr Eboue seems more than able of delivering a good final ball into the box. The only thing that marred his otherwise great performance was an unfortunate own-goal that he is not likely to forget in a hurry.

I’m sure mos fans will agree with me that Gervinho looks like he may well be the real deal… well actually they probably wont, what with being the bitter, miserable sorts that most gooners are these days.

His movement and positioning were very good, he has pace to burn and unlike certain member of our team actually knows how finish, his first goal came thanks to a superb pass from young Jack Wilshere who turned in yet another excellent performance furthering yet again my own view that he could well help bridge the gap should Cesc head off this year.

For his second goal in the red and white shirt it was Walcott who turned provider with a neat pass which Gervinho did well to finish whilst bundling himself over the keeper in the process.

Watching Gervinho’s pace and movement reminded me just how much we have a missed a certain TH14 in recent years both for the aforementioned movement and hopefully the shedload of goals that he is going to bang in with reckless abandon.

In the words of the manager “He has shown his qualities. He has quick movement behind [the defence], the timing of his movement is great and he is easy to find. We have seen what he can bring to the team and he contributes to the high pace we have in the team.”

Roll on next weekend and the Emirates Cup….

Worst goalie kit ever…

20 07 2011

I am sat here in complete shock and awe this morning.

Not because Arsene Wenger has blown 100mil on 3 world class signings or because I have won the Euromillions but because of this…

Handy for away matches in Afghanistan

It is of course the Everton goalkeeper kit for the 2011/2012 season and it is quite frankly shit.

Camouflage undoubtedly has many many uses however I am really not sure it has any place on the football pitch. I just really cant work out what the point is maybe Everton are hoping to gain a new found fan base in the armed forces??

Just in case you aren’t convinced of how shit this really is here is a picture of Tim Howard completely failing to blend into the background.

Joel Campbell rejects Arsenal

20 07 2011

Joel Campbell scanning the horizon for cash

Depending on how much of an alcoholic you are (says the man who reviews beer!) you may or may not remember the weekend.

If you are somehow able to recall what happened a few days /pints ago you might remember the assured tone taken by many “respected” sources as regards the “signing” of Costa Rican international striker Joel Campbell.

We were told that a fee had been agreed and that there was even an agreement in principle between Arsenal and the player, his own father/agent/twat, Humberto Campbell, told us that they were thrilled and everything would be signed, sealed and delivered within the next 24 hours.

Magically the next morning everything had changed, quelle fucking surprise, now we were hearing how other offers had arrived from a host of European clubs and that whilst Arsenal were in “pole position” nothing was in the bag just yet.

Fast forward a few days and we are now told by Campbell senior that his son will be staying with current club Deporivo Saprissa for the foreseeable future in order to focus on the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.

Apparently there are offers on the table that need to be analyzed and that they will negotiate after the world cup, in his own words “We hope to go to the World Cup and that Joel plays well without pressure. We’ll see what happens.”

Now whilst this is an admirable line for his father/agent to take it does rather fly in the face of his prior dealings and comments….

In fact reading between the lines one might be inclined to believe that what he is really hoping for is that his little darling has an impressive World Cup and that all of a sudden clubs cheque books fly open like a whores legs.

Juan Carlos Rojas the president of his son’s current club had this to say on the matter:

“It’s disappointing for football, for Saprissa that these people have not taken Arsenal’s offer seriously,” explained Rojas.

“I assume the father thinks things will get better after the decision, but there’s always a risk.”

Hmmm… seems I’m not the only person who hears the pitter patter of greedy feet. Personally I hope the whole venture backfires terribly for him, if there is one thing Arsenal doesn’t need it is more money grabbing cunts/agents and their sneaky tricks.

Woman dies after dog sex in Ireland

19 07 2011

43-year-old mother of four died after suffering a massive allergic reaction to dog semen

The woman, a mother of four children, suffered the reaction to the dog’s semen after willingly engaging in sex acts with an  Alsatian dog in county Limerick, Ireland

The woman died in October 2008, shortly after intercourse with the dog, and after a three-year investigation it was confirmed that her death occurred due to an adverse reaction suffered after having sex with the animal.

A source told The Star last night that the unfortunate woman involved came in contact with a man who provided the dog on an internet chatroom.

“Both these people would have been visiting bestiality websites and at some stage it appears they agreed to meet up for sex,” the source said.

“The Alsatian then entered the picture and it appears that intercourse took place between the lady in question and the dog on the night that she died.”

Disturbingly, the source added that the dog “appeared to have been groomed” to have sex with women.

Ok so a few things here… firstly WHY? secondly WHY? oh and WHY? ….Risk of adverse reaction to dog spunk aside I just don’t get why anyone would want to f*ck a dog

Still that’s Limerick City

Dear Barca

18 07 2011

Dear Barca,

I could write a lengthy, witty piece about how your attempts to unsettle and sign our club captain are not only insulting but are reaching a point where you are just starting to look like repetitive fools.

However I am not going to do any of that, there have been tens of thousands of words written about your sneaky underhand behaviour and the coverage is getting almost as tiresome as your attempts. Nothing I am going to write here would change things a jot.

However it has often been said that a picture paints a thousand words; as such I am going to hand things over to some Chinese Arsenal fans who have managed to capture my sentiments perfectly.

Barce pay £40m take Cesc away or go home to wank’
